 Mary Jane Conroy6th Grade, St. Thomas More SchoolMary Jane Conroy is a sixth grader at St. Thomas More School. She is the sixth child of Christopher Conroy and Mary Lou Dressman-Conroy of Bethel Park. When Mary Jane was diagnosed with Down Syndrome at 2 1/2 months, one of the most difficult things for her parents to accept was that she would not attend school with her siblings at St. Anne's School in Castle Shannon. To their joy, she did attend preschool there, but it was apparent that she would need more support to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. Her family began to explore the St. Anthony School Program as well as the public school offerings. Without question, the living, dedicated, faith-filled environment of the St. Anthony School Program was where Mary Jane belonged! Mary Jane enrolled in kindergarten in August of 2000 and two of her siblings, Jeffrey and Adam, transferred from St. Anne School to St. Thomas More. The dream of attending school with her brothers came true. Mary Jane and her family were warmly welcome at St. Thomas More, and have made many friends there. In kindergarten, Mary Jane learned how to print her initials and how to trace her name. She can recite the Our Father, Hail Mary and the Pledge of Allegiance. She performed in the Spring Concert and the Christmas Pageant. It was a blessing to see the loving guidance of her five- and six-year-old classmates as she stood on the altar dressed as an angel. While she does tire more quickly than her classmates on the playground and in the classroom, this is met with acceptance. She sometimes resists written work, but is encouraged to keep trying. Her family is truly grateful for the existence of the St. Anthony School Programs and to all who support it in any way. |
