A State-of-the-Art Program for 50 years:
A St. Anthony Student Sees Clouds for the First Time
In the 1950's, St. Anthony was a leader in the education of students with developmental disabilities. A state of the art Advisory Council had been formed that consisted of eight physicians, including world-renowned doctors such as Dr. Benjamin Spock and Dr. Raymond Novak, personal eye physician to famous Pittsburgher, David L. Lawrence.
Struck by the fact that none of the St. Anthony students were wearing glasses, Dr. Novak created an eye test for the mentally challenged in 1955 that changed lives. When a St. Anthony's student put his first pair of glasses on, he looked up in the sky and asked, "What are those big bumps up there?" He had never been able to see the clouds before!
Today, St. Anthony School Programs is a one-of-a-kind program producing excellence - just as it has since the 1950's. St. Anthony students continue to achieve to the level of their ability in their inclusive settings. Brian Wellinger, a recent alumni, is a full-time employee with benefits at the Highmark mailroom. Nicole Hardiman has been awarded the St. Joan of Arc Medallion.
