A Message from the Executive Director

MERRY CHRISTMAS! What other phrase can start the heart strings singing more quickly or more gladly than those two words? In them are wrapped all the best emotions of the ages. It is useless to try and improve them, for they form the perfect thought.

Looking back over the past year, I realize just how important all of your generosity and friendship has meant to St. Anthony's and how empty our lives would have been without you.

Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give". So at this time of the year, we are thinking of you and the families who have given of themselves to help us along the way. I hope this will be a truly Merry Christmas for you and everyone at your house, and that the New Year will bless your home with all the good things in life.

My very best regards,
Gary D. Lasinski
Executive Director

Ninth Annual Opportunity Award Dinner

St. Anthony Student Jessica Murdy gave the student welcome and speech for the Opportunity Award Dinner.

Over four hundred people attended the St. Anthony School Programs ninth annual Opportunity Award Dinner which was held on Friday, November 3, 2006 at the Westin Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh.

Jesus Christ was the model for inclusion. He sought out those who were excluded, ignored and devalued. He gave them hope, friendship and dignity. Each year the Dinner Committee diligently works to seek out individuals and organizations who follow Christ's example by being leaders in creating opportunities for our students, and making room in their lives for persons with disabilities. This year, Honorary Chairpersons Frank and Athena Sarris joined Bishop Winter, honored guests and our St. Anthony families and staff in publicly honoring three Opportunity Award winners: Passavant Memorial Homes, Howard Hanna Real Estate Services and Special Olympics, Incorporated.

This year's dinner was a magnificent event where our children tried to "Steal the Hearts Away" of all in attendance. Many of our students volunteered to help our dedicated staff welcome guests and sell 50/50 raffle tickets throughout the evening. St. Anthony student Kristin Wagoner, a senior at the University of Pittsburgh site, received a standing ovation for two songs she played on the piano before dinner.

Encouraged by the evening's emcee, Mike Clark of WTAE-TV, those in attendance had an opportunity to bid on a wide range of silent auction items with all proceeds benefiting our students.

The Opportunity Award Dinner is our major fundraiser of the year, and we thank all of you who supported the dinner by attending the event, sending in a monetary or auction donation or through your thoughts and prayers. It is truly a night for our students to shine, and there's no better way to boast of our accomplishments than by letting our supporters see for themselves the lives that are made better by their generosity.

St. Anthony Student Profile

St. Anthony Sutdent Michael Mercer

A Note From Michael in His Own Words...
My name is Michael Martin Mercer. I was born March 6, 1990. I have a brother named EJ. I also have a cat named Kiki.

My favorite childhood memories are going to Kennywood Park and trick or treating. My interests are bowling, watching movies, reading books like "To Kill a Mockingbird" and playing video games. My family and I have been on some fun vacations. This past summer we visited New York City. I really liked going to New York because of the Empire State Building, Times Square and Yankee Stadium.

I spent first, second and third grade at Brookline School because they had a special resource room for autistic kids, but it wasn't so special. Then I spent fourth through eighth grade in the St. Anthony School Programs St. Thomas More site. It was good. Now I am a junior in the St. Anthony Program at Bishop Canevin. I really like my school because you can make friends. I also like the classes in my resource room.

Some of you might like to know what autism is like. For me, I like to have everything kind of neat. I do things to keep myself from getting bored like going on the computer, watching television and playing outside. I have trouble talking to people, but I am trying. I do not like big crowds because I feel nervous, and sometimes I have trouble finding the right words to express my emotions. But most of the time, I just feel like a sixteen year old guy.

A Note From Michael's Parents...
Michael is a young man with autism. Today, there is much attention paid to the subject, but it was not like that in 1993 when we began our journey to find out what was happening to our son. Michael entered the St. Anthony Program in fourth grade at the St. Thomas More site. Here was a program that treated both the students and parents with respect and care. In addition, it provides its students with a religious education, which was something that was nearly impossible before. At every possible opportunity, the students mix-in with the general population of the school. In the classroom, the lunchroom and at extra-curricular activities, St. Anthony's students are not "the special kids" but part of the student body. We cannot express our thanks for those who have supported St. Anthony's. Your generosity is deeply appreciated by all the people whose lives you touch through the work of the St. Anthony's staff. May God bless each of you.

Please Help

Whether you are a first time donor, or have been a long time supporter, we hope that you will consider including St. Anthony's on your giving list this year. Your generous support of our program allows us to continue to reach out and touch the lives of children with special needs and their families. We've included an envelope in this newsletter for your convenience. Please keep our students and staff in your prayers this holiday season, as we continue to provide Catholic, inclusive education to these precious children. May God send his blessing to each of you at this joyous time of year.

Post-Secondary Program Expands

This fall, St. Anthony's opened a new post-secondary site at the University of Pittsburgh. This expansion was necessary to meet the increasing demand for enrollment in the existing Duquesne Program. We started the fall semester with six students. As with the Duquesne Program, our new site will work to prepare our students with life skills and vocational training. Currently, staff has secured placements for our students delivering mail at the Petersen Center and doing office work at the Down Syndrome Clinic and the Coalition for Christian Outreach. Our students are also using the computer labs at Carnegie Museum and participating in childcare training. The vocational training which is provided allows our students to better prepare to enter the workforce after graduation with the goal of becoming self-sufficient and living independently.
