Why St. Anthony\'s

The University-based Program
St. Anthony's programs at Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh are entirely unique to both the area and the U.S. The program addresses a discrepancy between the regular education system and the special education system. Typical students graduate from high school after grade 12 and then move to college, while Special Education students remain in the high school curriculum until the age of 21. The Duquesne program responds to the upper limits of inclusion that have been caused by this discrepancy. At Duquesne, youth move from the High School to an advanced vocational program within a university environment, gaining an important opportunity to interact with university students.

The thrust of the post-secondary inclusion program is the functional application of previously acquired academic skills, vocational training, mobility training and social skill development. Each student is assessed in these skill areas and an individualized training program is developed. Students are assigned a number of job placements such as officework, childcare training and housekeeping. Each student is paired with a "typical" university student who serves as his or her job coach and mentor, allowing our students to develop a social relationship with an age-appropriate peer.
